Exploring the work of renowned Maritime Archaeologist, Valerie Fenwick
Valerie Fenwick made waves through her work in maritime archaeology, including the rescue of multiple landmark ancient boats. These discoveries include the Anglo Saxon Sutton Hoo and Graveney Boats, the 100 year old Rye Barge, Primrose, and the Bronze Age Dover boat.
Discoveries
Our field team unearthed over 200 structural remains dating back 6,000 years, revealing trade links that reshape theories about early European metallurgy.
Valerie’s work at Sutton Hoo included the reconstruction of a large cauldron, complex chain-work, and of iconic objects, such as the lyre, iron ‘stand’, and ‘whetstone’.
The Graveney lay hidden under more than 2 metres of marsh clay for over 1000 years, until it was discovered by chance in 1970.
